What is Live Messenger?

Windows Live Messenger is the new name for MSN Messenger. MSN is changing the name because MSN (MicroSoft Network) is being cut up into MSN and Windows Live. The next version of MSN Messenger won't be Msn 8.0 but Windows Live Messenger, or Windows Live Messenger 8.

A brand new name ofcourse does not always have to mean that the whole program has been changed. Windows Live Messenger will just succeed MSN Messenger 7.5, just like 7.5 replaced MSN 7.0!

Windows Live Messenger functions

The following describes all the new functions you'll see in Windows Live Messenger:

Voice calling
With Voice calling you can easilly call country numbers and mobiles from your desktop. First you have to buy minutes to buy, and then you can call through the Live Messenger! You can ofcourse also call free from computer to computer like skype etc! ( you will need a mic for this to work )

A brand new look
Windows Live Messenger looks a lot different then older versions like Msn 7 or Msn 7.5!

Shared folders
You can now easilly share files with the people in your contact list! When you share a folder to a contact you have he or she can see all the changes that are being made in that folder. This makes a great way for sharing your files as it turn it into a sort of extenstion of windows explorer ;)

Add-ins
Thisone is important for all the programmers amongt us . The Add-ins make it possible for them to add to windows Live Messenger through the Application Programming Interface (API). this enables them to add extra functionality to WLM for example and make kewl little programs we can use!

Integration with other Windows Live Services
You can now integrate WLM with other great services like Live Contacs, Live Mail, Live Today etc...

Offline messaging
When your buddies are offline but you do want to tell them something important, then you can just send him/her the message and they will see it the next time they login to Windows Live Messenger. Offline messages can only be sent by WLM but the people using Msn 7.5 will also still be able to receive the messages.

Search contacts
Finally you can find your friends more easilly by this search option Microsoft implemented!

Merged Messages
Wanneer je meerdere berichten van dezelfde contactpersoon achter elkaar ontvangt, kun je ervoor kiezen deze 'samen te laten smelten'. Je zult dan niet meer telkens 'Contact zegt:' voor een bericht zien staan. When you receive multiple messages from the same contact person, you can choose to merge the messages so you wont see that annoying "contact says: ..." in front of every message!

Is Windows Live Messenger the same as Windows Messenger?

The new name of the messenger can cause a bit of confusion. First Microsoft had 2 versions of the Messenger: MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger. The last one had it focus more on the business side of the world.

Windows Live Messenger will now replace MSN Messenger, while Windows Messenger will remain valid for now!

Yahoo IM Integration with WLM

An important new function in Windows Live Messenger will be the cooperation with the other very popular Yahoo Messenger! By having these two giants work together will enable us to contact yahoo people from MSN and the other way around! Yahoo Messenger is one of the most popular Instant Messaging programs around, only MSN has a bigger percentage. So for the users it will be great if they merge.
